Process

Walking, looking and sketching are an important part of my process. Time spent in the landscape allows me to absorb its changing light, colour, movement and forms, which then find their way into my paintings and prints.My Monotype prints like my paintings are unique. I create gestural shapes in colour, by wiping and layering ink on the plate to build forms. The process of making a print enables me to distil the information from my paintings to produce a different form of art and that in turn feeds back into my paintings.My bird series began as a study in presence and movement, combining botanical studies with the gestural looseness that runs through my landscape work. These paintings grow from quiet moments of watching gulls, small woodland birds and waders.
