My work is informed by the natural world. My process often starts with walking, sketching and looking, absorbing information, forming images in my mind.
That connection to place and the natural world is important and constant and a source of great inspiration to my work. In my landscapes I strive to evoke a mood of a place, using bold sweeps of paint to communicate the vitality and energy of light, colour and shadow.My Monotype prints like my paintings are unique. I create gestural shapes in colour, layering them to build layers and structures that form land, sea and sky. The process of making a print enables me to distil the information from my paintings to produce a different form of art and that in turn feeds back into my paintings.My bird series began as a study in presence and movement, combining botanical studies with the gestural looseness that runs through my landscape work. These paintings grow from quiet moments of watching gulls riding the wind, small woodland birds flickering through branches, waders lifting from the tideline. I’m drawn to their energy, fragility and resilience, and to the way they inhabit the shifting light of the Devon coast.Many of the life forms I paint are endangered or threatened species, painting them for me is a way of highlighing both their beauty and their fragility in the world we all share.EducationBA (Hons) Illustration Brighton UniversityTeachingDrawing Lecturer Loughborough School of Design and Creative Arts
